The Drastics are by far the most talented Roots / Dub outfit in Chicago. Their meticulous attention to detail is sometimes lost on a hometown crowd, trapped within the confines of single-minded, working-class sensibilities.
Reggae fans who are familiar with the genre however, ardently support The Drastics, and recognize them for the genius arrangements they always seem to come up with. Their songs borrow generously from the genres of Funk and Jazz, yet remain safely within the framework of Reggae / Dub.
The only drawback is when you add vocal talent to a group who exhibits such instrumental virtuosity.
The unfortunate tendency is for vocal talent to take a back seat; so while their last release was a compilation with several vocalists, accompanied by a second cd of all the instrumentals, I feel this release severely under-utilizes the talents of Fada Dougou and myself.
We are the main artists who tour with them, so there is certainly no friction; but my belief is that in Chicago, they have had to search far and wide for vocalists who will show commitment, and also have the necessary skill to keep up with their arrangements.
I love listening to Waiting as a fan of Reggae, and now I am waiting, for to the album
that brings The Drastics to the prominence they deserve. In my humble opinion, said album will be equal parts instrumental and vocal. |
